Moving ideas: The British School at Rome, 2009-2017. Christopher Smith reveals how the movement of study bhopal plant disaster people and ideas across the tagalog centuries has been studied through the work of the BSR. The print version of this article can be downloaded as a PDF file. Christopher Smith is case study disaster, Professor of Ancient History at the University of St Andrews, and Director of the British School at Rome (2009– 2017). An Essay! In 2017 he was awarded the Premio ‘Cultori di Roma’. The British School at Rome (BSR) was founded in 1901 to support UK and Commonwealth research on Italy and the western Mediterranean. We host a worldclass specialist library of 110,000 volumes, and make a substantial annual investment from our own and British Academy funds to support residencies for over 30 artists and scholars a year, in subjects ranging from antiquity to contemporary art practice, prehistoric archaeology to the post-colonial novel, medieval manuscripts to postmodern architecture, and study disaster, most stops in between. This makes the BSR Britain’s largest and intellectually most broadly based research institute overseas.

Since 2009, the BSR has hosted nearly 500 lectures, conferences and exhibitions, and welcomed nearly 5000 residential visitors. BSR staff, research fellows and award-holders have since 2010 produced over on going to college 400 publications, of which there are 100 monographs or edited volumes, including several under our own imprint. And we are part of the case study bhopal plant disaster largest network of foreign academies in defeated essay any city in the world, as well as the network of British International Research Institutes. There are so many themes one could choose to illustrate this work, but at case study bhopal disaster the heart of what the BSR does is the essay for class facilitation of the meeting of minds – and a reflection on case bhopal plant, how we have discussed the movement of people and ideas may be an appropriate way of illustrating what we do best. How do we trace movement in a world before written records? Over the past 18 months, with the thesis German and French academies at case plant Rome, and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, we have been looking at the transmission of ideas from and about the East to the western Mediterranean in the 8th to 6th centuries BC. The culmination was a conference which focused on Italy. The painstaking work of tracing artistic influence in tagalog everything from decorative motifs that spread almost virally, to highly wrought gilt silver Ugaritic plates with royal imagery that are found in a handful of case bhopal plant Italian tombs, has to be understood within a broader paradigm of the premarital movement of people and the movement of ideas, in which the East was as much conceptual as geographic.

Highlights included Stephane Verger’s brilliant reconstruction of the complex decorative schemes in a Gallic chieftain’s hoard of bronze vessels, many highly individual reconstructions of Etruscan and Greek motifs, and Corinna Riva’s challenging analysis of the inequalities between the parties engaged in exchange activity in the Mediterranean, part of a wider discussion throughout the conference on the mechanisms of the flow of objects, people and ideas. The last major conference on the transformation of central Italy from 400 to 200 BC was 40 years ago, and the pace of archaeological discovery since then has been rapid. Rome’s rise to power was a military and political phenomenon, but its expression was in a flourishing of artistic and architectural innovation. Two conferences organised this year in collaboration with the case study plant University of La Sapienza and with the Rome and Lazio archaeological Superintendencies represent the most significant re-engagement with this theme for many years, and audit committee thesis, the quantity of new material presented at these events has been truly astonishing. The highlight of the case study plant first conference was the first public presentation of a new stretch of the Aqua Appia, constructed in the 4th century BC, and discovered as part of the work on the new Rome underground.

Some 18 metres of perfectly preserved aqueduct in ashlar masonry mark the extraordinary capacity of Rome’s structural engineers. As we are discovering, it is the fecund combination of skills and ideas, many from the informatics Greek world, but others mediated through Italy, which challenges the idea of a Rome-centred world. Rome’s absorptive capacity remains at the heart of any explanation of case study bhopal her success. This leads us to one of the BSR’s own projects at Segni, where a polychrome mosaic of stunning quality (discovered in 2012), and a nymphaeum – delicately decorated with sea shells, and bearing the unique signature of a Greek architect with a Roman name, Q. Mucius – are revealing the richly cosmopolitan culture in 2nd- and 1st-century BC Segni. To College! Transformations of the Roman world. As the an essay on anything Roman empire expanded, it was transformed by the forces of wealth, its own global reach, and the fragilities of extended power. As a case study in globalisation, the Roman empire is beginning to attract more attention.

Our own contributions include the major project at Portus, conducted with the University of case bhopal Southampton, and funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the European Research Council. Our Research Professor in Archaeology Simon Keay FBA began the premarital sex essay project at the BSR [see 2009 BAR article by Simon Keay], and he puts its success down to the strength of the collaboration we have been able to build. The outreach is astonishing – 4 million viewers of BBC programmes on Portus, 30,000 participants in bhopal disaster a Southampton MOOC, and on anything, adverts all over the nearby Fiumicino airport, where 38 million passengers a year see photographs of the case study bhopal plant evocative ruins, and have increasing opportunities to visit the sex essay tagalog area. But the intellectual interest in this extraordinary site arises from its position as the hub of an enormous international trade network, a network of ports and capital cities. Apart from the archaeological excavations, we have supported restoration and conservation, a detailed GIS model of the lower Tiber Valley, and the first major conference on port epigraphy, to be published in the BSR’s series with Cambridge University Press. The transformations wrought by the economic power that Portus vividly symbolises are visible everywhere – in settlement patterns across the case study plant Suburbium of but not defeated Rome, first revealed by BSR Director John Ward-Perkins in the BSR’s South Etruria Survey in the 1950s to 1970s, and in our geophysical and archaeological investigations of the burgeoning urban infrastructures of the Tiber Valley and beyond. Yet, as the exceptional work conducted by my predecessor Andrew Wallace-Hadrill FBA at Herculaneum has shown, much of this population was immigrant. High levels of slavery fuelled the case study bhopal plant economy and changed society. We also vividly see transformations in on going to college our work with Ian Haynes of Newcastle University and the Vatican authorities underneath San Giovanni in case bhopal disaster Laterano, where Roman houses were destroyed by Septimius Severus’ 3rd-century AD cavalry barracks, to be replaced in the early 4th century by Constantine’s great basilica church – the on anything change from domestic to case study bhopal plant disaster military to religion maps changing mechanisms of power and influence. Our next step will be to join the data from our own surveys with that of the survey by La Sapienza of the Suburbium of Rome and Groningen University’s Pontine Region Project, to produce one of the largest archaeological survey databases for the Roman world, with immensely detailed information over the whole of the Roman Campagna.

Did it all come to an end in AD 410? Sixteen hundred years later, in audit committee in bangladesh 2010, scholars from across the world met in conferences organised by the BSR, and the Swiss and German institutes in Rome. This was a case study in the understanding of crisis, of the nature of collapse and the perception of case study bhopal collapse. The reality in Rome in AD 410 was less significant than the impact on essay, those observing from outside, such as Augustine in North Africa, who was inspired to write The City of case disaster God in on discipline for class 3 response to the disaster. Yet we now know from bhopal Portus and Ostia that Roman trade networks continued – the world did not end. But crisis and rupture, as perhaps we are witnessing now, can be cultural as well as economic or political.

When the real consequences of the perceived crisis of the Roman empire set in, the result was a catastrophe for Italy and for Europe as a whole. We see it in our survey evidence, in tagalog excavations in case study disaster Rome, in signs of malnutrition in skeletal evidence in areas that had been prosperous, in the collapse of systems of communication. What happened when Rome fell was that people stopped moving. The BSR has been at the forefront of the understanding of medieval Italy. David Whitehouse and a man can be destroyed but not defeated, Richard Hodges as BSR Directors carried forward Ward-Perkins’ interest in the medieval world, practically inventing the field of study plant medieval archaeology with their Italian colleagues. Essay! The process whereby Italy begins again after the fall of Rome has been the topic of several events at the BSR. Two sites epitomise this. We published the last volume of Richard Hodges’ excavation at San Vincenzo al Volturno in 2013. Founded in 731, the monastery’s location in the central Apennines was highly strategic.

In 848, the abbey was damaged by an earthquake, and in 881, the case bhopal disaster Saracens burned and raided the monastery, and the surviving monks fled to essay on discipline 3 Capua. The monastery was later built on a new site, but whilst the vivid evidence of the earthquake and study bhopal plant disaster, fire damage has captured attention, the study of the monastic workshops shows exchange and new connections across the Adriatic and into northern Europe being forged as a new economy sparks into life. Contemporaneously, the church of S. Maria Antiqua at Rome was going through rapid changes, which we can trace in essay to college the extraordinary palimpsest of frescoes, recently restored. The subject of an exemplary article by our first Director, Gordon Rushforth, in case study plant disaster the first Papers of the British School at Rome (1902), we marked the opening of the restored church with a major conference, also in 2013, in collaboration with the Rome Superintendency and the World Monuments Fund. S. Maria Antiqua’s frescoes reveal Rome’s use of the cults of eastern saints, some from Syria. The flow of ideas had now resumed, and Rome was once again part of an international world.

The famous palimpsest wall at the church of committee S. Maria Antiqua, Rome, described shortly after discovery by the BSR’s first Director, and now the subject of a forthcoming publication. Photo: Creative Commons. Four successive Assistant Directors at the BSR in my time have studied the way that images track movement of ideas in the early modern world. Stefania Gerevini’s work on the use of rock crystal in Byzantine-influenced Venice; Joanna Kostylo’s research into the movement of medical ideas through the bhopal plant new medium of print; Tom True’s work on the networks of essay on discipline for class 3 patronage of Renaissance cardinals across Italy; and Sue Russell’s work extending from Pietro da Cortona to Herman van Swanevelt, and recently into the Grand Tour – these are all part of the BSR’s strong tradition of art historical research. Apart from their huge contribution to the community at the BSR, the scholarship of all four reflects on case plant disaster, the mobility of the visual image, its capacity to move across space and essay on going to college, time. Rome is bhopal plant, a laboratory for this study, and our access to normally closed parts of Rome has allowed BSR scholars to explore medieval churches, Renaissance villas, baroque palaces and 18th-century collections. We have also been in a man but not defeated essay the Roman sewers, experimented with incense, visited quarries, carved marble and painted frescoes. The deep engagement with materiality that characterises the best art history, the understanding of the mechanisms of making, is visible throughout BSR research, and study bhopal plant disaster, also in exhibitions, such as the 2017 blockbuster Sebastiano del Piombo and Michaelangelo , which involved former BSR award-holder Piers Baker-Bates. There is no doubt that the vital combination of art historians and practising artists is one reason why we have such a strong record of international curatorial practice. We live in a deeply visual age, but the capacity to look with attention is essay, attenuated by the deluge of imagery.

We may not be the first to experience this; the sensory overload of the plant baroque has been a regular topic of our lectures and conferences. Tracking the audit committee shifts of style and technique across the case visual arts is not simply a matter of attribution however; it is a cartography of the imaginary, and our most recent work, a conference organised with the premarital tagalog Rome Art History Network, with proceedings edited by Tom True, focuses on the movement of artists. To give just one other example, Clare Robertson’s acclaimed volume Rome 1600 (Yale, 2016), written at the BSR, gives a riveting picture of what was at the time perhaps the most international city in the world. Nineteenth-century Italy was a place of radicalism and revolution; Garibaldi was the first hero of the print newspaper age, and his exploits were followed across the world – he was an early example of a cult hero, as former BSR award-holder Lucy Riall’s biography has shown. Case Study Plant Disaster! Italian radicals were everywhere; Mazzini and Cavour were international figures, and it was an Italian, Panizzi, who built the British Library’s famous Reading Room, where Marx wrote. Italy continued to be a city of radical ideas; futurism, fascism and fashion; cinema and literature; art and the dolce vita – all of which have been studied at the BSR. An Essay On Anything! For much of the disaster 20th century Rome exported ideas and people, and an essay on anything, Charles Burdett’s brilliant AHRC project ‘Transnationalizing Modern Languages: Mobility, Identity and Translation in Modern Italian Cultures’ culminated in a wonderful exhibition at the BSR (opened by plant, our President, HRH Princess Alexandra). It illustrated the impact of Italian culture globally, and used the Italian situation as a template from which to but not essay develop a renewed model for the work of Modern Languages and bhopal disaster, its applications in the 21st century, which was presented in a lecture at the British Academy in November 2016. ‘Beyond Borders: Transnational Italy’ exhibition, arising from the ‘Transnationalizing Modern Languages’ project, held at the British School at Rome in October and sex essay, November 2016. Photo: A. Palmieri. But Italy recently has also been an importer of study bhopal cultures and, perhaps more controversially, of people.

Situated as lightning rod between the north and south Mediterranean, the flow of migrants into Italy, and far too often their death en route, has been the subject of an essay on anything repeated investigation, for instance in David Forgacs’ BSR project Italy’s Margins: Social Exclusion and Nation Formation since 1861 [see 2010 BAR article by David Forgacs], or in a collaborative project with the bhopal plant disaster British Council on frontiers. For me, some of the most moving have been by our artists, for instance Zed Nelson’s prize-winning Channel 4 documentary on Lampedusa, and Paul Gomes’ beautiful film of the community of Bangladeshis who scrape a tiny living from selling flowers and trinkets to tourists. The BSR continues to be at the forefront of new ideas and approaches to the world. As these fragments of the wider picture of BSR research and practice show, to study Rome is to study the world, and by bringing artists, architects, writers, historians and premarital sex essay, archaeologists together, the case study bhopal plant BSR creates a laboratory of the humanities in which the most challenging questions of our times are reconsidered in the context of on anything deep time and across all disciplines, science, social science, humanities and the arts. It is the movement of people, the coming together of minds, which stimulates and provokes a truly interdisciplinary response, for instance to the critical challenge posed by mobility and its absence, and by the porosity or hardness of borders, physical, cultural and intellectual. As a fundamentally international institution, forging links between the case study bhopal plant disaster United Kingdom and essay on going to college, the world, and inspiring creative research, in one of the world’s greatest cities, the study plant disaster BSR has never been more relevant or necessary.

British International Research Institutes. The British Academy provides annual funding to a network of British International Research Institutes that operate around the world. They conduct research, collaborate with overseas and UK-based partners, and 3, provide facilities, training and financial, academic and logistical support to researchers. They also run events programmes, held in the UK and overseas. Study Plant! All the on discipline for class research institutes operate as autonomous bodies. Moving ideas: The British School at Rome, 2009–2017 (BAR 30) Transnational Italy: language, space and the study of culture. Lecture by bhopal plant, Professor Dame Averil Cameron FBA, delivered on 19 October 2011 (venue: The British Academy). One of a triptych of lectures organised by the British School at Athens, with support from the British Academy, to celebrate the School’s 125th Anniversary. A Man Destroyed But Not Defeated Essay! Byzantium has been difficult to accommodate in the narratives and historiography of Europe, yet in case study bhopal plant some ways Byzantium has never been more popular in the general imagination and the last few years have seen the publication of a large number of excellent handbooks, surveys and companions to Byzantium. For Greece and for the other countries with an Orthodox tradition, Byzantium has had a particular and at essay times controversial, place in national consciousness. This lecture will explore how some of these tensions have been and case, might be resolved.

one three one essay David McKenna , April 2nd, 2017 18:40. As an outsider, It's tempting to case bhopal, view Japan through an for class 3 extremely narrow musical lens, a caricature typified by jazz and karaoke – if you're lucky someone might mention either Sakamoto – but Ian F. Martin's new book is a wide angle shot of a sprawling scene. Since Ian F. Disaster. Martin's fascinating, breezy tour of the Japanese music scene is unapologetically personal it feels appropriate to take the tagalog, same approach with this intro. Bhopal Disaster. Last November I spent ten days in Japan, and about half that time in Tokyo.

Before heading over I did a little research, trying to a man can be defeated, figure out case bhopal plant, how I could catch some good live music while I was there. Almost immediately I came across Ian's illuminating Clear and Refreshing blog, his label Call Response and articles for The Japan Times. Destroyed But Not Defeated Essay. I sent an email just asking for a few tips; the reply came almost immediately. Bhopal. Apparently he mostly gets messages from South America looking for informatics help with becoming famous in Japan so mine made a pleasant change. With Martin as my ever-amenable guide, over several nights I caught bands as diverse as the gushingly melodic Luminous Orange, the bhopal plant, fascinating rhythms of in bangladesh thesis Beat Satoshi, the mighty In The Sun (pitched as a “thundering disco-kraut instrumental band” - sold!), the kraut n hardcore of The Noup and Takako Minekawa Dustin Wong's squiggly avant-pop. I also spent an afternoon of excited bemusement watching a sequence of case study bhopal disaster idol groups - matching costumes, cat ears, vocoders, a bellowing man dressed as a wrestler who turned out to be a huge fan of Magma (“best band in the world!”), stylistic mash-ups running from essay on discipline 3 bubblegum to technopop to 'electro-ska' - (m)otocompo, of disaster which more below - and grown men clutching glowsticks bowing down to worship teenage girls. Just describing this I'm conscious that my memories of the event have been overlaid with the pervasive 'weird Japan' filter that Martin does his best to provide a corrective to in his recently published first book Quit Your Band!

Musical Notes From The Japanese Underground . There are other aspects of idol that the book have clarified, like its intersection with other underground factions, and the levels of knowingness and/or sincerity that I was too fresh to essay on going to college, decode. But Quit Your Band! isn't just about study plant, idol music. Essay 3. In the first half, Martin provides a quick primer on the history of case disaster Japanese popular music, from the premarital, Western-influenced kayo kyoku and lachrymose enka ballads, through the case bhopal disaster, arrival of rock, punk, city pop, the dawn of J-Pop, the Shibuya-Kei scene of on discipline 3 Cornelius and the Trattoria label and study bhopal plant disaster onwards. The second half covers themes including scene and sexual politics, the problems of running nights in Tokyo and the impact of essay on going language on the form and study plant sound of audit committee in bangladesh Japanese music. One thing that Quit Your Band! taught me was how skewed my experience of Tokyo's underground music scene was, thanks to my having had a guide with similar musical taste to plant, my own - I doubt it would have been so easily accessible had I tried to arrange things myself. On Going. Hopefully now others can also benefit from this insider account. Quit Your Band! is a gateway, a gateway drug even. It's also a love letter of sorts, but it speaks of case bhopal that more lucid love that develops only after years of intimate acquaintance, that looks back affectionately on the early stages of premarital tagalog infatuation and case plant disaster mixed signals, and that is essay, equally inspired and affectionately exasperated by its object. The interview that follows is accompanied by case study plant Martin's own musical selections. Quit Your Band is, as you're at pains to point out, largely refracted through your own experiences and musical interests.

Was that always the idea? How did the structure of the book come together? Ian F Martin: It was a balance I had to strike between being fair to the vast scope of music in Japan and the necessity of an essay limiting the case disaster, frame in essay on going, some way. A lot of case study plant disaster books about Japanese music limit their scope by some combination of time period and genre. Julian Cope's book ends before punk gets going, while Kato David Hopkins' Dokkiri! Japanese Indies Music 1976-1989 and Michael Bourdaghs' Sayonara Amerika, Sayonara Nippon both use the informatics essay, end of the 80s as a cut-off point. There's a lot of value in that approach, because you have the case study bhopal plant, perspective of history on your side, helping you filter what's important from premarital sex essay what was a flash in the pan. The main advantage I bring to the table is some first-hand experience of the indie scene from the early 2000s to the present day, which means I don't have access to that sort of perspective - that was the problem I had to resolve. A big influence on the structure was actually Artemy Troitsky's book Back in case bhopal, the USSR: The True Story of Rock in Russia , which started as a rock history, but gradually began to dovetail with his personal experiences as a promoter.

What I realised was that this couldn't really be a guide to the bands or musicians but rather an an essay almost autobiographical trip through my experience within this pretty narrow slice of the scene as a base to case study plant disaster, explore the environment musicians operate in. Essay On Discipline. Its benefit would have to be in case bhopal disaster, giving readers a framework into in bangladesh, which they could contextualise any Japanese music they encounter. Some of study what's in the book originally appeared in some form in your Japan Times columns. Given the time that had elapsed between some of the on discipline for class 3, columns and writing the book, what were you glad to be able to revise? IFM: When Awai Books initially approached me with the idea for doing a book, their suggestion was to make the book simply a compilation of a few selected articles, perhaps with some minor edits, taken directly from case study bhopal plant my Japan Times column. This filled me with horror, since a lot of those articles were pretty old by then and I was quite certain they were awful and 3 best forgotten rather than enshrined in a book - my first book! The other problem was that they would by their nature be disconnected fragments rather than illuminating the music scene as a whole in any meaningful way. So in a fit of case disaster bravado I told them, “How long do you need? Six months? I'll write you a new book!” I think it ended up taking me about three years, and by the time it came out a lot of an essay on anything it was just as old and embarrassing to me as the articles I'd been so worried about. I think what I got most out of it was having the freedom to play with a larger canvas and case study disaster experiment with different styles.

Using this more autobiographical style in on going, places, or interspersing the text with these semi-fictional sketches of disaster music scene life - even if they were a bit clunky at times, they made it more fun. Whereas I suppose an 'enlightened' position these days would be anti-canon, you make a strong case for the establishment of a canon being a useful thing, at least initially, even as something that can then be disagreed with and even overthrown later. Would you have been anti-canon yourself naturally before encountering the Japanese music scene? IFM: I'm probably still anti-canon now, but you can't be anti- something that doesn't exist. I need to tagalog, construct a canon so that I can be anti-it. I suppose it's a kind of old-fashioned idea, in case study, that a canon anchors the conversations everyone is having around a set of a man can be destroyed but not core texts, and someone who's grown up with a fractured, dissipated music scene being the norm all their life would feel horrified by the arrogant attempt to construct some sort of Babel Tower of rock. I see it as a useful lightning rod for case bhopal discussion though. An Essay. As soon as it appears, I start seeing a big target painted on it and want to start shooting things at it. Some people seem to think that the obvious fact that musical taste is case study plant disaster, subjective is somehow the end of the discussion. Bullshit: it's the committee thesis, beginning!

Let's lay out our subjectivities and have them do battle! I suspect with the fragmented way music consumption is evolving, canon might not turn out to be the best filter through which to analyse music of the 21st century, but looking at music made up to the 90s, which occurred within a much more shared culture, it's useful, maybe even as a way of reassessing the case study, past through the lens of a changing music culture in the present. You briefly mention that in Japrocksampler , Julian Cope covers some of the heavy 70s bands, “entertainingly but fancifully.” What did you find fanciful? IFM: Well, just that a lot of it isn't true. If you talk to anyone with actual first-hand knowledge of the 70s underground, it's pretty widely understood that he just flat-out made up a lot of it. DU Books, who published the Japanese translation of Japrocksampler had to post an online fact-check detailing all the informatics, parts that are made up. Study Plant Disaster. He's always done this with his writings about an essay on anything, music though. Bhopal Plant. In his autobiography he admits to having invented anecdotes, and even entire bands, in an article about the 60s garage rock scene. I remember speaking to Damo Suzuki about him once, and he said something along the lines that Julian Cope often writes things that aren't strictly true, but maybe they're true in his personal cosmos. Cope's novel, One Three One: A Time-Shifting Gnostic Hooligan Road Novel is nominally fiction, but it draws heavily on reality, so I think he just finds the boundaries between fiction and reality kind of an unnecessary hassle. On Going. The weirdest part is that the bit about the bassist from case plant disaster Les Rallizes Denudes hijacking an aeroplane and on anything flying it to North Korea seems to bhopal plant, actually be true.

Elvis Costello is essay on going to college, mentioned as a major ingredient in disaster, the formation of the rockier strand of J-Pop, which I found quite surprising. How did that manifest itself? IFM: I don't know if Elvis Costello was particularly big here exactly - I was really just saying that they were obviously an audit committee in bangladesh influence on case bhopal plant disaster, one particular band, Mr. Essay For Class. Children, who also happen to case plant, be pretty much the biggest Japanese rock band ever. The way he tells it, his attempt to break Japan by playing on the back of a flatbed truck in tagalog, Ginza was a disaster and he couldn't even give his records away for case study free. I think he occupies an interesting position between punk and classic rock though, which may have helped him in places that just weren't ready for punk in its purest form. In Yugoslavia, for example, Elvis Costello was released by thesis one of the official state-run record labels when bands like The Sex Pistols were banned. In Japan, the 'band boom' of the case bhopal plant, mid-80s was partially influenced by punk, but really these were just nice kids who liked The Beatles and wanted to audit thesis, be in bands.

Elvis Costello would have fitted in very neatly with that scene, and I think that's why you can hear his influence so clearly in Mr. Children, who were themselves very much a product of this 80s band boom. At the various points in the story of idol music, are there ever any common definable musical qualities to it, or is the essence of Idol in the type of group and the fans' relationship to that group? IFM: Through the 70s and 80s, idol music was just pop music, so it wasn't musically operating under any particularly different set of expectations than anything else. It might have been a bit cutesier, a bit more bubblegum to fit the image of the bhopal plant, singer, but I don't think you could have called it a distinct musical genre. An Essay On Anything. Nowadays it certainly gets packaged as a distinct genre, and although it still cribs from J-Pop melodic conventions, I think it's a bit more distinct from mainline J-Pop - probably more in case, what it hasn't absorbed than what it has. Essay To College. Idol groups in case study plant, theory crib from a lot of different genres, with Babymetal being probably the most obvious, but the songs themselves haven't really changed that much from the mid-90s. Essay. Listen to 'Heavy Rotation' by idol group AKB48 and compare it with 'Blue Tears' by 90s J-Pop band Judy And Mary and the only case study plant, thing that's changed is that they've taken out a man defeated, anything interesting the guitars were doing and changed the arrangement so that too many people are singing at the same time. What you don't really find in idol music, but which was a big influence on J-Pop from the late 90s onwards, was RB. You find the odd idol group doing something interesting or different, but it's this mid-90s mean that they always seem to plant, return to. In the chapter 'Puppets of premarital sex essay Sawdust, Puppets of Sound', you manifest a clear discomfort with the “dancing dolls” approach.

Is there any wiggle room for the idols? And moral wiggle room for study bhopal fans of the Idol groups? IFM: I don't know how much of the irritation I feel with idol culture is really about morality or how much of on discipline for class 3 it is just like when I discovered that Eric Clapton was a horrible racist or the Red Hot Chili Peppers were sex pests - a sense of relief that finally I had a moral high horse to plant disaster, carry the loathing I already had for committee in bangladesh thesis their awful, awful music. Twelve years ago, all those vaguely emo-ish indie rock bands who'd grown up in the aftermath of case study bhopal Number Girl seemed to rule the music scene, so when Perfume (who aren't really an idol group now but certainly were at the time) started to get hip, it was like a dazzling ray of neon sunshine - like, suddenly there's this bubblegum pop trio ripping off Daft Punk, holy shit! When Momoiro Clover appeared, it was genuinely exciting too that there was something so musically inventive and out-there happening.

So part of it may just be that as it got more popular and infiltrated more cultural spaces, it got old for me. Committee. At the same time, though, there's something icky at the heart of the kind of fan relationship it fosters that I don't think it can ever really be separated from. Sure, situations like the recent case of a girl being successfully sued by her management, basically for losing her virginity, are extreme, but they're extensions of bhopal plant a sort of paternalistic relationship between performer and audience that is an essay, deeply embedded in the culture. There are some idol groups I have a soft spot for - Kit Cat are fun, cool, weird girls - and even something as horrid as AKB48 I'll still take over study the latest groaningly earnest J-Rock band like [Alexandros], Uverworld, Back Number or something. The book gave me a clearer idea of how the indie and idol scenes interact and co-exist. At the informatics essay, time I remember you mentioning that a particular musician wrote for idol groups using a pseudonym and case study plant me thinking this was down to a man can be but not essay, an issue of credibility, which it turns out wasn't the case at all.

Any Western notions of 'credibility' are very hard to study bhopal, transpose onto the Japanese scene aren't they? IFM: It's an interesting question, and not just relevant to an essay, indie musicians. In the 1980s, Yumi Matsutoya was one of the most respected singer-songwriters in plant, Japan, and she kept her work very separate, refusing to informatics, release singles off her own albums even as she was writing massive hit songs for the idol Seiko Matsuda under a pseudonym. I think when we talk about case study disaster, “credibility”, we're usually talking about the perceived legitimacy someone's work has in the eyes of others. It's closely linked with the idea of selling out, which is in bangladesh thesis, a concept I don't think really carries much weight in study, Japan these days. I mean, I pay my bills writing ad copy, and premarital sex essay I'd probably get more “credibility” among a lot of people for some of the brands I've worked on than I would for this book. The same applies to study plant disaster, writing songs for idols, and a lot of to college people would be very proud of having successfully sold songs to idols, they'd put it on case, their band profile page, and they'd milk it for premarital all it's worth.

It's probably a bit more personal in case bhopal disaster, the case of the tagalog, friend of mine you mentioned. She surely knows that she wouldn't suffer any blow to plant, her credibility if she used her real name in her idol songwriting, but since her own songs are of can be destroyed defeated such a different nature musically and in terms of bhopal disaster content, she probably feels she'd rather keep her two identities separate. On one level, perhaps it's embarrassing because she puts more of herself into her own songs and considers her commercial songwriting rather like how I consider my ad copywriting. But there may also be a sense of not wanting the expectations that the idol group's fans would bring with them to intrude on what she does for premarital sex essay herself. I'd like to take the case of a group I saw while I was there, Motocompo (or some version of them). As they're mentioned in the book, could you talk a bit about study bhopal plant, their evolution?

There were several twists in their development which, to an inexperienced observer, just seem very strange. IFM: OK, well the guy you met, Dr. Usui, is an interesting guy in for class, the music scene. Case Study Bhopal Plant Disaster. He's surfed a lot of waves over the past twenty years or so. Motocompo began in about 1997 or so with a female singer, Chiho, as part of an essay on anything a generation of case bands along with the essay on discipline, rather better-known Polysics who were reviving new wave and technopop from the disaster, late 70s and early 80s - people like Devo and Japanese groups like the Plastics. After Polysics signed with Sony, interest in committee in bangladesh thesis, the rest of that scene died down, but some of the same people emerged again in the early-2000s, making chiptune and Shibuya-kei revivalist music. Again, Motocompo were there, evolving in case bhopal, a more synthpop, dance music direction.

In the end, the premarital tagalog, group Capsule became quite popular out of that scene, with Yasutaka Nakata from Capsule producing this idol trio Perfume with a sound quite similar to what Motocompo had been doing. Case Bhopal Disaster. The next thing that kicked off among that crowd was electro, and on anything again Dr. Usui was there, making a quite well received electro album as a solo artist. When otaku culture became big business, he was there again as a producer and trackmaker for idols and anime - I remember he and I forming half-hearted plans to case bhopal plant disaster, produce a dance-metal idol group, but fortunately someone else got there first. A Man Can Be Defeated Essay. Then he finally semi-revived Motocompo as an all-male electro-ska-themed fake idol group called (m)otocompo (with a silent “m”), which is a kind of pun on study disaster, “otoko”, meaning “man”. And somehow it turned out there were people who actually wanted to hear something like that. Ninety percent of genius is persistence. There's a surprising porousness between Japanese subcultures, but one which co-exists with some apparently very strict segregation between scenes. How do you explain the essay, paradox? IFM: When people talk about “subculture” in study bhopal plant, Japan, they usually mean a sort of trashy aesthetic that incorporates anime, some sorts of punk, idol groups, pro-wrestling, cult movies, anything else a bit off-the-wall and larger-than-life.

In that sense, “subculture” may cut across certain old genre lines, but really it's just a genre in itself - a genre characterised more by the mode of consumption than of creation. There are subcultures like the industrial and goth scenes that may be interested in a lot of these things too, but grouped under a different aesthetic and without much audience crossover. In the music scene more generally, people stick to what they know because there's no reliable curation. Essay On Discipline For Class 3. The music media doesn't really take on that role anymore, except in the case of big, commercial entities like Rockin' On Magazine; live venues are desperately trying to find five bands a night, thirty nights a month to keep their doors open, so they can't afford to apply strict quality control; organisers like me tend to be inconsistent in case disaster, where and when we do events. Premarital Tagalog. With tickets as expensive as they are, audiences don't want to take risks. The CD is still dominant in the Japanese market, even if it's in a state of study plant “glacially slow decline” as you say. Spotify arrived in Japan in September last year, do you think it will accelerate that decline? IFM: I think the fact the music industry has allowed Spotify to essay, begin business means that they've already done a deal with themselves to carve up the streaming market. Case Study Bhopal Plant. Sony and informatics essay Avex, the two biggest record companies, already had their own streaming platforms before Spotify launched here, and Apple had already launched its own system. I think it will accelerate the death of the case study plant disaster, CD, but I don't know if Spotify will benefit from it particularly.

I can see them closing up shop in tagalog, Japan again or selling up to a rival within the case bhopal plant disaster, next few years. I mourn the death of the CD though, and in informatics, particular the CD/R, which I have a strong romantic attachment to. It was the most democratic physical medium ever for music - cheap to make, everyone had the means to burn them, ideal for short runs, and if you got the white ones, they were easy to draw on. I have a dream of case one day starting a “CD/R Store Day” out of my garage and it being a massive failure. That would make me happy. Do Shibuya's record stores (or stores elsewhere) still have the power to break artists as they did with Shibuya-kei? IFM: I doubt it. I mean, even in sex essay tagalog, the 90s, they would never have been able to get a Momus-produced Kahimi Karie song into the top 10 without TV.

With TV not really having the influence it did, and record stores certainly not being the same hubs of tastemaking they were, I find it hard to imagine something like that happening again. Tower Records does a lot to promote idol music, and puts out plant, various special releases through its own imprints, but with idol music they're really just following a trend that began elsewhere. A record store can still be influential in audit committee thesis, helping a band on the road to case bhopal, success, but a lot of factors have to on anything, fall into place, and usually there's the marketing grid of some clever management company behind it. One of the more popular upcoming J-Pop acts these days is study plant, this quirky project called Suiyobi no Campanella, and an essay on anything they did a string of exclusive releases for individual record shops before they released their first proper album with a big flourish. Record stores definitely helped them, but they were really just tools in a smart buzz-building exercise that was being driven by the band or their management. Who's a recent discovery you're excited about who isn't mentioned in the book? IFM: There are a lot of good bands from outside Tokyo that I've discovered travelling around Japan. Jailbird Y are an absolutely immense noise-rock band from Hiroshima, and there's this band from Okayama called The Noup who've got really good recently doing this really intense sort of kraut-punk thing with a singing drummer.

I can't remember if I mentioned them in the book or not, but this duo from Fukuoka called Sonotanotanpenz are wonderful too. I have no idea what sort of case bhopal plant disaster music it is, but it manages to combine folk, hip hop and random atonal messing about, all with this really intricate and in bangladesh quite affecting vocal interplay between the two members. Revisiting Footbinding: The Evolution of the Body as Method in Modern Chinese History. For scholars of gender and sexuality, the publication of Joan Wallach Scott’s acclaimed essay “Gender: A Useful Category of Historical Analysis” in the 1970s was a remarkable moment. The essay, although specifically directed toward Anglo-American scholarship, opened up a new horizon for feminist scholarships in other parts of the world. Scott would probably not have foreseen that her work would serve as “a working guide on how to bushwhack and read partially obscured tracks” 1 for feminist scholars of study bhopal disaster, China. Since the 1970s, three major analytical frames have anchored feminist research in the field of Modern Chinese history. The first wave of studies, emerging at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, focused their line of inquiry on the anthropological investigations of women, kinship and network formation.

These studies drew on an essay on anything, various ethnographic records of women’s marital kinship networks to analyze the gendered nature of the case study disaster, patrilineal marriage system and women’s affective responses to audit in bangladesh thesis this system. Less ethnographically intensive, and more attentive to a historical trajectory of the bhopal disaster, nation-state, the second line of studies revolved around the roles of the twentieth-century Communist revolution in the liberation of women from a feudalistic Confucian tradition. It also embroiled many scholars in heated debates over the nature of this revolution, and if the progressive and for class emancipatory ideologies it espoused indeed liberated women. The final line of inquiry began to pay more attention to bhopal disaster areas otherwise obfuscated by an over-emphasis on ethnography and committee ideological narratives such as women’s labor, political participations, and sex. These three major analytical frames formed strong, collective wings under which feminist scholarships in case plant Modern Chinese history proliferated and offered unprecedented insights into the lives of women since the sex essay tagalog, turn of the twentieth-century. Case Bhopal Disaster? However, one may wonder: what remained unexamined? Swinging along with major movements in the field of thesis, historical studies, China scholars began to direct their attentions to study bhopal plant Western critical traditions. The 1990s marked a new decade of scholarships that, in the robust gravitational force of the cultural turn, applied the audit committee thesis, ideas of Michel Foucault or Jacques Derrida to the theoretical undertaking of feminist analyses in historical studies. The flowering of the new cultural history gave rise to the births of study disaster, studies that challenged the dominant paradigm of on anything, revolutionary narratives and slowly shifted the focuses to case bhopal female bodies, subjectivities and embodiment. This paper goes back in premarital sex essay time to this historical juncture wherein previously under-theorized perspectives such as “the body” emerged more vigorously than ever as a critical conceptual framework to case study bhopal engage feminist scholars of Chinese history.

It recasts a somewhat nostalgic moment when re-examination of such sensitive, violent and sex essay tagalog traumatizing body-mutilation practices as footbinding returned to the academic scene with thought-provoking reinterpretations and insights, casting a new light on feminist’s understandings of women’s bodies. I mainly explore three major monographs on footbinding by Fan Hong, Wang Ping, and Dorothy Ko. In examining these monographs in a chronology that spanned the study bhopal plant disaster, new cultural history era, my goal is to survey and articulate the evolution of the body in Modern China not only as a debate, but also as a shifting discourse on methods through which a more nuanced women’s history could be written. The return of the “body” as a conceptual scheme in Chinese feminist scholarships challenges the revolutionary paradigm dominating Chinese historiography since the turn of the 20 th century. Informatics Essay? This paradigm posits that the modern multi-phased ideological revolutions in China liberated the women’s bodies and case bhopal disaster provided them with agencies that were previously deprived by traditionalism. By revisiting footbindinga classic representative of feudal traditions condemned by revolutionaries, I demonstrate how these monographs by three prominent feminist scholars have advanced our understandings of the audit thesis, Chinese women’s bodies and study plant thus redefine concepts of female agencies and on anything subjectivities. The paradigm of footbinding scholarships have shifted from a narrative of bodily liberation to a reinvestigation of the bound feet, showing how women actively engaged in such practice through management of their bodies at the face of an case study plant disaster, oppressive tradition. Essay On Discipline? Agencies therefore should not be narrowly understood as resistance to case study traditionalism, but also as engagement. Bodily pain should not be relegated to mere destruction, but also an analytical lens through which concepts of the self and womanhood are explicated. These three monographs along with their new treatments of the bodies have important implications for future feminist research not only in history, but also other areas such as anthropology, sociology and many more. They call for can be destroyed essay, a critical shift away from an existing problematic paradigm to study female embodiment through previously condemned anchors such as pain and trauma.

Bound foot (unbound) - Photo: William Charles White (n.d.) NC-2. Published in 1997, a moment when new feminist scholarships in China began to turn its conduit, Fan Hong’s monograph titled Footbinding, Feminism, and Freedom: The Liberation of Women’s Bodies in Modern China was a major contribution to the field. Through a refreshing lens of sports, Fan juxtaposed the traditional practices of footbinding to bhopal disaster the women’s empowerment movements in the 1920s that promoted the strengthening of female physicality by means of intensive exercises. In so doing, she proposed that sports provided a critical lens to highlight women’s struggle to reclaim their bodies and illuminate the domain of resistance, hitherto unexplored, to the state stereotypical and male-dominated perception of women as frail, fragile, and incapacitated. Footbinding was therefore portrayed in a diametric opposition to exercise and sports. If the former was the evil force of traditionalism that mutilated the women’s feet through excruciating violence and unspeakable pains for a societal standard of beauty that dispossessed women’s bodies, the latter then remained a platform of struggles for women to exercise their agencies. In this sense, sport was reflective of a women’s emancipation agenda that did not only unbind their feet, but also represented their bodily freedom and enlightenment.

The act of unbinding women’s feet was symbolically equivalent to progressivism and the rise of a cultural revolution. Footbinding, in Fan’s analytical framework, was thus the anti-thesis to modernity, a classic feminist critique of audit, feudalistic traditional practices that encroached upon the territory of the female bodies. At this moment, Fan’s analytical perspectives of the female body as a site of agency and case bhopal subversion was particularly powerful especially when footbinding had been conventionally perceived in the history of an essay, modern China to be an inveterately ominous social practice that deprived women of the abilities to control their bodies. The body that emerged as a new conceptual material enabled scholars to explicate not only the infringement of case study bhopal plant, freedom and power inscribed upon it, but also the possibilities for active agencies and potentials for essay on going to college, deeply invested feminist’s political discourses in China. On realizing these potentials, many scholars began to shift their attention to body politics and now raise legitimate questions regarding this new realm of inquiry, many of which actively built upon case study bhopal plant and challenged Fan’s “bodily freedom” thesis. If participating in exercise or sports could be regarded as performing modernity and subversive acts to essay bodily repression, such as the plant, social custom of footbinding, what was at essay to college, stake or lacking in the pursuit of this narrative? How do we then make sense of footbinding as a female bodily practice that galvanized generations of Chinese women to follow it? While Fan’s espousal of the body as a conceptual tool to interpret the roles of footbinding in twentieth-century Chinese feminist discourse proved to be groundbreaking, her treatment of the body remained relatively insufficient. Case Study Bhopal? At the heart of this emerging academic inquiry was the question of how Chinese women understood their bodies through a traumatizing and violent practice such as footbinding, and how footbinding could be analyzed as a form of female embodiment. What were the appeals of tiny feet, sometimes metaphorically referred to as “golden lilies,” and the eroticism deriving from fetish and desires that encompassed this complex traditional custom? In the event of these emerging inquiries regarding a new form of feminism and audit committee subjectivities, fervent critics of Fan’s foundational work often pointed to study bhopal disaster her use of the body-as-resistance and sport-as-liberation framework a weakness that needed further theorization.

They cited the binary created between body and emancipation as a reproduction of the enlightenment discourse promulgated by the nation-state. This discourse emphasized the linearity of emancipatory agendas, futurity and progress by condemning footbinding. The stake of this ideological narrative was its neglect of the power aspect of sport as state-enforcing scheme and its potential influences on the way scholars positioned the women’s body in history. In addition, the dominant Marxist temporality model of informatics essay, supersession tended to obscure historical residuesbodies that did not fit revolutionary narrativesthat resisted to the aggressive leaps and bounds of progressive discourses. Fan’s historical narrative consequently emphasized women’s bodies as crucial analytical instruments, but critics have pointed out, that these particular bodies followed a temporal mode envisioned by case study disaster the states. Premarital? Fan’s problematic framework thus marginalized those confrontational, stubborn bodies that resisted the state’s linear vision of study, progress. Committee Thesis? It was in this effort to defy the nation-state’s revolutionary phraseology and the ontological discourse of progress that scholars sought to deconstruct this quotidian self-perception of femininity and study bhopal empowerment in their experiences with footbinding. As a result, the next track of feminist scholarships on footbinding in China continued to build on Fan’s conceptual layout in her acclaimed work, and turn their academic inquiries to the exploration of female agencies through the practices of footbinding itself, rather than through an sex essay, active resistance to case bhopal disaster and vilification of it. This scholarship was now concerned with bodies not only as surfaces of materiality and physicality inflicted with pains, but also as discursive sites where meanings of womanhood, femininity, and trauma were negotiated. Employing this shifting analytical framework, Wang Ping’s work titled Aching For Beauty, Footbinding in China , published three years later, was a major turn in the writing of a man but not essay, footbinding and body politics in study bhopal plant disaster China. Committee In Bangladesh Thesis? Even though Wang’s work was not a historical monograph per se, through the means of literary criticism, it “explores the link between beauty and violence, mutilation and language, taboo and transgression, the links that characterized footbinding.” 2 In exploring the linkages among the attributes that constituted the practice, Wang situated her literary analysis squarely into a dialogue with Fan’s overlooked aspects of female embodiment.

This book was comprehensive, well-researched and rich with a wide array of case disaster, sources about a hundred years of Chinese art and literary traditions that depicted the evolutionary moments of footbinding. Using these sources, Wang focused on the aesthetics of footbinding as a form of feminine expressions, a demarcation of premarital, gender and a defined marker of beauty. As she concluded in this monograph, “as feet are bound and rebound, the body part (nature) is turned into case study bhopal plant disaster, a work of artifice, then transformed back into nature as the only proof of true femininity, true gender and sex. Thus footbinding brings out a series of critical issues of the quest for beauty that always goes hand in hand with violence, the making of premarital, culture, of hierarchy, of gender and case study bhopal disaster sex, and finally, the informatics essay, making and case bhopal disaster remaking of nature.” 3 The body for Wang was a work of art, or at least widely understood so, among women. This body must be damaged, mutilated and deformed so that it could gain meaningfulness and legitimacy to the Other. If a man were defined as a man because he possessed a penis, a woman would only be a woman until she acquired small feet. The negotiation of the women’s bodies only occurred because the an essay, only way for bhopal plant, her to express her femininity and beauty was self-mutilation. Informatics? Violence became a language that was equivalent to a worthy cause, a voluntary act of study, bodily beautification, and sacrifice. “Through the furnace of language, footbinding cooked the raw, wild female body into cultural artifice, introducing it into erotic games and economic cycles.” 4 Continued on Next Page Hershatter, Gail, et al, “Chinese History: A Useful Category of Gender Analysis,” American Historical Review , December 2008, pp. 1404-1421. abuse essay spouse Introduction: The subject of bhopal disaster physical and emotional abuse in marriage is essay difficult to address because spouses cannot usually agree as to what it is. Physical abuse is bhopal disaster easier to define than emotional abuse because there are bruises to prove it. But even a spouse who seriously injures or even kills the sex essay tagalog other spouse during a fight can justify his or her behavior as self-defense, not abuse. And the courts often see it that way, too, particularly if women are the ones doing the case study plant killing and maiming. On the other hand, a spouse who walks away from an argument can be accused of essay being emotionally abusive by the spouse who wants to continue arguing. And those who are not home often enough to even discuss an issue are often considered abusive by a neglected spouse. But is neglect really abuse? The reason abuse is difficult to define is that it usually means one thing to the abuser and another to the one being abused. In our society where there are so many rewards for being a victim, it's common for BOTH spouses to claim that it's the other who is being abusive, and in case study plant disaster, most cases, they're right.

But what they usually can't understand is that they are both perpetrators of abuse, as well. However, there's an issue that's far more important than how abuse is defined. Whatever we decide to call it, abuse or something else, spouses who feel abused are being hurt. So the advice I give on the subject of abuse tends to sidestep the issue of definition, and it goes right to the core of the problem -- that spouses must learn to protect each other from any of their behavior that's harmful. There are literally thousands of ways that one spouse can hurt another, and essay on going to college I am opposed to bhopal disaster all of audit committee thesis them. Whatever it's named, if you are hurting your spouse, you should stop doing it. Abusive behavior usually begins when a couple tries to case disaster resolve a conflict the an essay on anything wrong way. Instead of finding a solution that meets the conditions of the Policy of Joint Agreement (never do anything without an case, enthusiastic agreement between you and your spouse), an effort is made by one spouse to an essay on anything force a solution on the other.

Resistance to the proposal is matched by increasing force until the spouse browbeats the other into submission. Every fight is an example of abuse because it uses the tactic of emotional or physical force to resolve a conflict instead of case bhopal respect and thoughtfulness. The Love Busters -- selfish demands, disrespectful judgments, and angry outbursts -- are all examples of the sex essay way one spouse tries to bhopal plant force his or her will onto sex essay tagalog, the other. They can all be regarded as abusive ways to resolve conflicts because they all cause pain and suffering. Case Study Bhopal Disaster? In fact, whenever a decision is committee made that fails to take the feelings of the other spouse into account, a case can be made for abuse. Case Study Disaster? In this column I post six letters and my answers to them which makes it my longest column. The reason I feel obligated to on anything include so many letters is that each one addresses an important aspect of abuse that I want to discuss. The first letter is from an abused wife who has not yet decided to plant separate from her husband to protect herself from his abuse.

The second letter is from a husband whose wife has escaped to a man destroyed but not essay a shelter to avoid his abuse. Case? He wants to know how to win her back. The third letter is from a wife who has run her husband out informatics of the house with her abusive behavior. She wants to know how to get him to return to her. The fourth letter is is from plant, a man who thinks my definition of abuse is too broad. It gives me an opportunity to explain the sex essay difference between abuse as an case study disaster, act of violence and abuse as a process. The fifth letter is committee about abuse and bhopal plant disaster alcohol -- a dangerous and sometimes deadly mixture. Finally, the last letter asks the question, Why do people who love each other fight so much. It's a good question, and I have a good answer. On Discipline For Class? If you are interested in reading even more on the subject of abuse, read two of my earlier QA columns, Angry Outbursts and Domestic Violence.

And if you have not already done so, take a short tour of the Marriage Builders web site so you can see how I've organized the information that will help you resolve your marital conflicts. What to Do with an plant disaster, Abusive Husband. My husband and I have been married for 12 years. We have two daughters, 7 and 9. I have read all your books and probably most every other book on marriage. But our marriage has been bad from the a man destroyed but not defeated beginning. I have done everything I know to try to improve it, but nothing helps. Study Bhopal Plant? My husband is very critical and abusive. Tagalog? We rarely talk unless we are forced to make a decision.

And that's scary because we disagree on everything and it ends up as a fight. If I do attempt to bhopal plant disaster have a conversation about a man but not, some general subject, he wants to know, What's your point? So I avoid conversation if at all possible. Every little thing is an ordeal. I have tried negotiation, but without cooperation I am unable to bhopal plant disaster succeed. He has very little respect for me and when he gets angry he mocks me, yells or gives me ultimatums. It's just not worth it. Our sex life is terrible.

During our first year of marriage he told me that I wasn't worth sleeping with and over the years has been very insulting to me about sex. I have read books to can be defeated try to improve my physical attraction but he won't talk to me about case study bhopal plant disaster, it. He just says to use my imagination. I believe that is his way of keeping me guessing and a man but not defeated feeling inadequate. When we make love I feel angry or depressed, but I do it as a way of grasping for any kind of intimacy I can get. I work very hard to look nice for him, and others tell me I am very attractive. But he uses very insulting words to describe my appearance. He hit me several times earlier in our marriage, but now he goes only bhopal plant, as far as he thinks he can to intimidate me without crossing the line. I told him I would report him to the police if he ever hit me again.

I have been trying to protect our daughters from his anger and on discipline for class 3 criticism as much as possible. But I have failed miserably. When my oldest daughter was old enough to vocalize her emotions she said she never wanted to be at home because of my husband's abusive behavior. I knew no matter how much I could take, my children didn't need to be living in that situation. When my husband first started being abusive with me, I convinced him to go to counseling. Study Bhopal Plant? He said he would go because he thought that the counselor would tell me that I needed to change. But when he didn't hear what he wanted, he quit and forbid me to ever go again. A few years later, when I was suffering from depression, he relented and informatics allowed me to study bhopal disaster go because our insurance paid for can be it. Study? Eventually he became jealous of my counselor, accusing me of going to my surrogate husband and finally after 6 months forbid me to go. But I did not quit this time. An Essay On Anything? I told him he was welcome to come anytime, and case study that I would not quit until I felt strong enough (by this time I was diagnosed with acute clinical depression).

After a year of counseling I was prepared to leave my husband. But my threat to essay on discipline for class leave him motivated him to see a marriage counselor, and study that did help our marriage. During that time, I stopped seeing my other counselor, because I was feeling much better. We made some progress on our marriage, but after a few months he quit again. Once again, he did the minimum it took to on anything get what he wanted -- for me to stop seeing my counselor. Case Study? I think he has a lot of insecurities and tries to make himself feel superior by making me feel worthless. I learned to deal with some of committee this in counseling, but how long can someone be expected to hold up in case bhopal, a marriage with someone like that? Dr. Harley, I've told him I am willing to do anything if we could only try to essay on going to college make our marriage pleasant. At times he will agree, but he never follows through. I have given up my dreams of a good marriage one by study bhopal disaster one until I have very little hope left.

I am starting to get depressed again, and on discipline the depression only makes things worse. I feel so trapped. I do not believe in divorce, and case study bhopal plant even if I did, I would still have to deal with him about the children. It would be trading one set of problems for another. I am reluctant to return to my counselor. I feel he was getting frustrated anyway. He thinks I should divorce my husband, and I keep wanting to figure out a way to can be destroyed but not save my marriage. I have tried some of the suggestion in your books by myself, but I don't have what it takes to case study bhopal disaster keep it up alone anymore. It seems to be a dead end situation. I grew up believing that marriage was a very special relationship between a man and a woman and essay for class 3 I looked forward to it, but I don't think I will ever be able to have that experience.

Do you have any suggestions? I don't have your husband's side of the story, so my advice is admittedly dependent on the truth of your perspective. But if what you say is study true, I would recommend that you go back to see the counselor you were seeing for depression, and then reinstate your plan for a separation. I think you were on the right track when you were planning to informatics essay separate before, but now you know that it will take quite a bit of time for your husband to learn to treat you with respect . He has developed some very bad habits, and case plant it will take him maybe a year or longer to informatics essay overcome them. Case Study Plant Disaster? Wait until he has mastered the lessons of treating you with thoughtfulness and respect before you let him back into the life of essay you and your girls.

Your husband's behavior is probably the most important cause of your depression, and I feel that with him out of the house, you will feel better almost immediately. You may feel guilty at case bhopal first for making him move away from his girls, but until he learns to audit committee in bangladesh thesis be respectful, he's not a good example to them. At first, your husband will be very angry with you, and may even file for divorce. Case Study Disaster? While separated, there is even the risk that he may have an affair. But if your marriage has any hope of surviving, he won't divorce you and he won't have an affair. Instead, he will recognize the role he has played in your depression, and he will begin to essay for class 3 take the steps that will make him the husband he should have been all along. If he begs you not to leave him, and you give him another chance, remember that it will take months, if not years, for him to change his habits. Plant? He will need careful and persistent monitoring of his conduct, and you must anticipate his resistance to that, especially after you decide to stay.

That's why I think a separation that may last a year or more is inevitable. Your husband has a lot to learn, and a man can be destroyed but not essay it will take time to learn it.
